In this podcast interview IDS’ Head of Communications James Georgalakis speaks to Berouk Mesfin, senior researcher at the Institute of Security Studies in Ethiopia.
Berouk is co-author of a new IDS Rapid Response Briefing on the impact of the sudden death of Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi last August. In the interview we explore the dangers of a state built around one man. Will the situation remain stable until the next planned election in 2015? Can the new regime sustain Ethiopia’s economic growth despite huge development challenges? Will the needs of a growing and youthful population be met or is there the chance of an Egyptian style uprising in the absence of political reform?
Prior to joining the Institute for Security Studies Berouk Mesfin worked as a political adviser to the US Mission to the African Union (2007). Moreover, he has held several positions at the Addis Ababa University. Before joining Addis Ababa University, he had served as an intelligence analyst at the Ethiopian Ministry of National Defence (1997-1999).
